New year. New you–get ready for the new year’s plans and actions on sustainability.
It’s up to the individual to decide what action they want to take on being more sustainable. Think of this resolution as an opportunity to be creative in your sustainability.
Many individuals want to be sustainable but find the whole process daunting. The best way to end this potential to become overwhelmed is to pick one topic, such as recycling or using recycled products more often, and stick with it.
Our goals must be achievable, so we want to take steps to get there and make it part of our regular pattern. Once we research, and figure out some small steps (goals) we can work toward, we can implement that. Make sure you’re also making goals that are achievable and realistic within a specific timeframe–also something you’ll have to design.
For people in the business world, this should be a recognizable pattern of how goals are achieved. You plan in the board room for how you’re going to take on the world. Here, you can plan to maintain its existence, help improve or maintain your local communities, and possibly lower future and current costs. It’s a win-win.
Why plan our sustainability New Year’s resolutions?
- Making a plan can help lead to the future success of realistic and achievable goals.
- Actions using sustainable thinking can increase positive outcomes for the environment, communities and the bottom line.
- Achieving success with one sustainable arena can help inspire people to take further actions on sustainability, which can lead to further positive outcomes.
How do I get started with my New Year’s resolutions planning?
The short answer is to start brainstorming topics of interest you have. The best avenue to become sustainable is to get behind something you can believe in. This is a starting point. After that, it’s the success that will drive the process.
After you’ve identified your topics, likely through a brainstorming session, break down your topic into pieces. This way we’re finding the parts of our daily routines (or systems we’ve developed) and removing the unwanted pieces. By breaking this down, and attacking it piece by piece, we can see a path forward.
The path forward from there is up to the user. It’s their adventure. Remember to plan your action to become sustainable within a specific timeframe. Once your first goal is achieved, celebrate your success, but be ready for the next piece to fall.
As to how far an individual wants to go with planning, go ahead and set it up. We’re promoting an annual outlook, but if you want to do a five-year plan, that’s okay, too. There is much to learn when it comes to sustainability, and it isn’t always possible to learn what actions to take in a day. Just like anything in business, follow the process (plan) and success is likely to follow.
